Art AS/A Level: Fine Art / Graphic Communication /Art, Craft and Design

All students choosing Art AS/A Level will be give the opportunity to choose from three pathways:

Fine Art, which may be defined as work which is produced as an outcome of the student’s personal experience, rather than that which is created exclusively for a practical function or that which is the outcome of a tightly prescribed brief.

Graphic Communication, which conveys information and ideas by visual means, or

Art, Craft and Design (unendorsed); the unendorsed route will enable students to explore a range of two or three-dimensional approaches to their studies, either as freestanding or related experiences.

The course of study is organised in a modular fashion thus allowing us to cater for a breadth of individual requirements. We aim to give students a wide range of experiences and opportunities, and are keen to encourage the development of strong personal qualities in each student's artwork.

During Year One students will be given an introduction to Fine Art, Graphic Communication and Art, Craft and Design (unendorsed).  Students will complete modules in Observational Drawing, Fine Art and Graphic Design/Illustration and Computer Aided Design. They will choose a pathway leading to an AS qualification.

Work will be assessed by means of:

  • a coursework component
  • an externally-set assignment

During Year Two work will be student-directed and will be assessed by means of:

  • a coursework component in which students develop work in response to an idea, issue, concept or theme of their choosing, including both practical work and an essay of up to 3000 words
  • an externally-set assignment

A large number of our students go on to study Art & Design at a higher level. Subject to tutors' recommendations and a portfolio interview, this course guarantees the offer of a place on the College's post A Level Foundation course in Art & Design.

Please note there is an art shop on site.
