International Baccalaureate- a Beacon Department

The HENLEY College has been offering the International Baccalaureate since 1990. It was one of the first state institutions in the UK to introduce the IB and since 1990 the number of students has steadily grown and its subject results have consistently been above the world-wide mean. Every year, Henley IB students have gained places at Oxford and Cambridge as well as all the leading UK universities and institutions abroad, including universities in Salzburg, Leipzig, Melbourne and Illinois. Enrolments on the programme are now around 60 a year which enables the College to offer a broad choice of subjects to suit all needs from the aspiring medical student to those wanting to specialise in the arts, humanities and languages.

Over the past few years, the College has helped many state schools and colleges set up their own IB programme and as part of its Beacon work the staff at Henley are willing to share their experience and good practice with other staff. The College strongly supports the International Baccalaureate Schools and College Association (IBSCA) in the UK, which is an important source of support for IB institutions.

The HENLEY College has welcomed staff on mentoring visits from Brockenhurst, Alton and Wyggeston & Queen Elizabeth I Colleges, who are now also offering the IB. We have also assisted Waingels College and Newcastle College when groups of staff came to Henley to talk to staff in various subject areas.

If any school or college would like any curriculum support or are looking to carry out a feasibility study on the IB then please contact the College at beacon@henleycol.ac.uk or telephone 01491 634022.
