All apprentices must be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week. If the apprentice’s circumstances or the nature of the employer’s business makes this impossible, then employment must be for a minimum of 16 hours per week.
The National Apprenticeship wage is £3.50 per hour for apprentices under 19 or for those who are aged 19-24 and in the first year of their apprenticeship; however, some employers choose to pay more. Anyone over 24 must be paid at least the national minimum wage.
Existing staff stay on the same wage.
You must also provide Apprentices with the same benefits as other employees.
Existing staff who start an apprenticeship usually remain on their current salary.
From April 2016 employers will no longer be required to pay secondary Class 1 (employer) National Insurance Contributions (NICs) on earnings up to the Upper Earnings Limit (UEL) for apprentices under the age of 25.
Most of the training will take place in the workplace where you as an employer will be required to teach the apprentice job specific skills.
There may also be college-based training required, the amount is dependent on the type and level of the apprenticeship.
Each apprentice will be allocated an assessor who will support the apprentice’s progress and development through workplace visits.
