Sport and Exercise Science (Extended Diploma)

Course structure

• Before you start

  You may be required to complete an activity before you start in order to help introduce you to the subject. Check back in the summer term for more details.

• Course content

  Units of study will include Functional anatomy, Applied sport and exercise psychology, Specialised fitness training, Coaching for performance and fitness, Applied research methods in sport and exercise science, Sociocultural issues in sport and exercise, Sport and exercise physiology and Nutrition for sport and exercise performance. Students will be assessed via internal assessments in the form of essays, reports, workbooks and presentations and through externally assessed tasks and short- and long-answer questions. All students will be expected to complete one week of related work experience in each year of the course. Students will benefit from the use of the multi-purpose sports hall and fitness room in practical lessons.  All students are encouraged to combine their studies with enrichment sports or sports development programmes (including high performance and elite sports where appropriate).

• Life after Henley

  This course is an accepted qualification for entry into university.

  Last year students went on to various destinations including university places at Swansea, Oxford Brookes, Bath, Hull, Gloucester, Nottingham Trent, Coventry, Bournemouth, Bath, Worcester, Loughborough, Lincoln, Brunel, Portsmouth, Winchester, Exeter, Birmingham. Students also went on to join the Royal Navy and continue rowing with Leander.

  Future careers might include PE teaching, lecturing, sports management, coaching, physiotherapy, exercise physiology, sports nutrition, sports psychology, sports journalism, sports analysis, sports therapy and strength and conditioning.

  It is also excellent preparation for those wanting to progress to industry-recognised qualifications and careers in sports therapy, the fitness industry and coaching.
