Applied Science - Medical (Extended Diploma)

Course structure

  You may be required to complete an activity before you start in order to help introduce you to the subject. Check back in the summer term for more details.

   

• Course content

  The Applied Science course gives you a good grounding at advance level in all three sciences through a series of 13 units over two years. Four units are externally assessed, whilst the other nine units are assessed through coursework assignments. The units vary in content from pure science topics such as ‘Human body systems’ to more practical units such as ‘Laboratory techniques and their application’. There is also the opportunity to do some specialist forensic units such as ‘Forensic evidence collection’ and 'Diseases and Infection'.

  You will participate in a number of field trips and benefit from the insights and experience provided by a range of guest speakers. You will also have the opportunity to apply for work experience in a science industry of your choice, with possible placements in a hospital laboratory, science research or analysis, brewing, veterinary science or conservation.

  You will develop a wide range of practical and transferrable skills and be assessed continuously through the coursework element. You will be expected to produce high quality scientific  

• Life after Henley

  This course is an accepted qualification for entry into university, particularly for science-related degrees such as criminology, dietetics, forensic science, forensic psychology and biology-related subjects. Alternatively, students may consider direct entry into employment or further training.

  Last year students went on to various destinations including university places at Coventry, Brighton, Aston, De Montfort, Staffordshire, Buckinghamshire New, South Wales and Portsmouth. Students also went on to carry out apprenticeships and to join the Police force.
