Intermediate Apprenticeship in Hairdressing 

The Intermediate Apprenticeship covers all the basics of hairdressing. Apprentices work as a Salon Junior, assisting senior staff while training as a Junior Stylist. Day-to-day responsibilities are likely to include booking appointments, shampooing, conditioning, drying and styling hair, and mixing and applying hair colour.  Apprentices must complete 7 mandatory units and a selection of optional units to achieve the qualification.

Mandatory Units:
  • Advise and consult with clients
  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
  • Colour and lighten hair
  • Style and finish hair
  • Ste and dress hair
  • Cut hair using basic techniques
Duration: 20 months
Training:
  • One-off induction
  • Monthly College workshops and work-based supported learning
  • On-the-job assessments
  • Employer led work related skills training
Suitable For: Those new to hairdressing who are social individuals, happy to converse with people at all levels.
Qualification Includes:
  • Level 2 in Hairdressing
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English at Level 1 or 2 (depending on prior qualifications)
  • ERR (Employer Rights and Responsibilities)

Advanced Apprenticeship in Hairdressing 

Advanced apprentices take their learning a step further by developing their cutting and colouring skills so they can carry out all the latest fashion techniques and maybe even determine the fashion looks for the future.  This qualification is also a good stepping stone on to a Level 4 Diploma in Salon Management or Foundation Degree.  Apprentices must complete 4 mandatory units and a selection of optional units to achieve the qualification.

Mandatory Units:
  • Provide client consultation services
  • Creatively style and dress hair
  • Creatively colour and lighten hair
  • Creatively cut hair using a combination of techniques
Duration: 20 months
Training:
  • One-off induction
  • Monthly College workshops and work-based supported learning
  • On-the-job assessments
  • Employer led work related skills training
Suitable For: Those who have completed the Intermediate Apprenticeship in Hairdressing and have worked in a salon for some time.
Qualification Includes:
  • Level 2 in Hairdressing
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English at Level 1 or 2 (depending on prior qualifications)
  • ERR (Employer Rights and Responsibilities)

Intermediate Apprenticeship in Barbering 

The Intermediate Apprenticeship in Barbering covers all the basics of barbering.  Barbering apprentices will work as a salon junior, assisting senior staff while training as a junior stylist.  Day-to-day responsibilities are likely to include booking appointments, shampooing, conditioning, drying and styling hair and mixing and applying hair colouring.  Apprentices must complete 7 mandatory units and a selection of optional units to achieve the qualification.

Mandatory Units:
  • Advise and consult with clients
  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques
  • Dry and finish men's hair
  • Cut men's hair using basic techniques
  • Develop and maintain effectiveness at work
  • Create basic outlines and detail in hair
Duration: 13 - 20 months (depending on prior experience)

  • One-off induction
  • Monthly College workshops and work-based supported learning
  • On-the-job assessments
  • Employer led work related skills training
Suitable For: Those who work or want to work in a hairdressing salon or barbers.

Intermediate Apprenticeship in Barbering 

The Advanced Apprenticeship in Barbering is for those who have been working in a salon/barbers for some time.  It will include advanced cutting and facial hair shaping, with optional units including shaving, advanced patterns in hair and colouring.  Apprentices must complete 4 mandatory units and a selection of optional units to achieve the qualification.

Mandatory Units:
  • Provide client consultation services
  • Creatively cut hair using a combination of barbering techniques
  • Design and create a range of facial hair shapes
  • Provide shaving services
Duration: 13 - 20 months (depending on prior experience)
Training:
  • One-off induction
  • Monthly College workshops and work-based supported learning
  • On-the-job assessments
  • Employer led work related skills training
Suitable For: Those who wish to specialise in advanced barbering.
Qualification Includes:
  • Level 3 in Barbering
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English at Level 1 or 2 (depending on prior qualifications)
  • ERR (Employer Rights and Responsibilities)
