Position:  Apprentice Nursery Practitioner

As an Apprentice Nursery Practitioner your role will involve:

  • Assisting in the smooth running of the nursery.
  • Working as part of a team under the direction of the nursery manager to provide safe, high-quality care and education for the children.
  • Arriving punctually to help set up the nursery, maintain and alter the physical environment (indoors and outside) during the session and tidy away at the end of the session.
  • Helping to provide a high quality teaching and care, delivered in a Montessori way and working within the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage.
  • Contributing to developing and maintaining balanced and flexible daily routines and long term, medium term and curriculum plans which ensure each child is working towards the EYFS within the Montessori Ethos. 
  • Contributing to developing a safe, warm, inviting, purposeful and stimulating environment including helping to make equipment, prepare displays, maintain notice boards.
  • Working collaboratively, cooperatively and respectfully with all other staff in order to contribute to a happy, positive environment for everyone, acknowledging the manager as your line manager.
  • Using the nursery systems of observation and record keeping so that children’s attainment and progress are effectively and regularly assessed and the information is used to inform, plan and improve practice and provision. This may require work to be done out of hours.
  • Promoting children’s rights, equality, inclusion and anti-discriminatory practice.
  • Developing a working knowledge of and follow nursery policies and procedures, and to contribute to updating them on a regular basis.
  • Practicing the nursery key worker system.
  • Liaising and work in partnership with parents/carers, both formally and informally, exchanging information about children’s progress and encouraging parents’/carers’ involvement. To provide written feedback of these meetings.
  • Attending parent information events.
  • Contributing to making the nursery a safe environment for children, staff and others, and to ensure that equipment is safe, standards of hygiene are high and safety procedures are implemented at all times.
  • Liaising with the Principal, Manager and other professionals as necessary.
  • Taking on one or more areas of responsibility in the nursery depending on previous experience and staff team requirements.
  • Helping support effective transition procedures both within the nursery and between families/carers, other pre-school settings and schools.
  • Attending all staff meetings at which your presence is required.  
  • Undertaking ongoing personal continual professional development including completing all training that forms part of your apprenticeship commitments and attending a minimum of 3 one-day training courses per year; and to ensure core training is updated every 3 years.
  • You will need to have a commitment to equal opportunities and confidentiality. 
  • Undertaking any other reasonable duties as directed by the Principal or Manager in accordance with the nursery’s business plan and objectives.

  • Ability to communicate well and to record and pass on other information accurately.
  • A high expectation of all children and an ability to foster and enrich children’s play and learning, individually and when children are in groups.
  • A friendly, helpful, caring and flexible approach, showing open-mindedness and patience with children, parents and other staff.
  • Suitability both mentally and physically, to care for children.
  • To be punctual and well presented.
  • Understanding and acceptance of the nursery aims and policies.

Desirable Criteria 

  • Ability to plan and implement the EYFS curriculum and daily plans both indoors and outdoors.
  • Prior experience of interacting with children.
  • Possess good numeracy and literacy skills and to be confident in using information and communication technology.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles and content of the Early Years Foundation Stage and how to put them into practise.
  • A knowledge of current guidance on health and safety, safeguarding and promoting the well being of children.
  • A current paediatric first aid qualification.

Future prospects:   There may be an opportunity to progress on to an Advanced Apprenticeship upon successful completion of the Intermediate Apprenticeship.

In order to progress onto Level 3 you will need to either have achieved GCSE grades A* to C in Maths and English or equivalent or be working on achieving these grades by the end of your Apprenticeship

Qualifications required:  You will need to have Grade C or above in GCSE Maths, English and ICT or equivalent or working on achieving these grades by the end of your Apprenticeship.

Hours:  30 hours, Monday to Friday 8.15am - 3.15pm
